Quick Fix: Wii U Won't Connect To Router

Hello Everyone,

Quick Fix: Wii U Won't Connect to Internet is below Router guide.

If you're like me, for some reason your Wii U just won't connect to your router! You can see your router as an available connection, you know your WiFi password, but the Wii U just won't connect! Well, good news folks. Its a really easy fix, just follow the guide below.

  • Press Y (or top left on the touch screen) to access connection options.
  • Choose manual connection.
  • You will have to enter your SSID. For those that don't know, that is simply your routers name. You can see this by clicking on the WiFi icon on your PC. Mine is called "Fuzzy Slippers".
  • Now, choose what type of security your connection has and enter your password.
  • You have two options for the next step.

  • Option 1: Open your internet browser and enter "192.168.0.1" into the search bar. This should take you to your router's gateway where you can find the required information for the next steps.
  • Option 2 (Windows): Hit the "Windows" button and "r" at the same time to open the "Run" application.
    • Type in CMD and click OK.
    • In the black window that pops up type in "ipconfig/all" to find the required information.
  • Option 2 (Mac): Go to "System Preferences" and to the "Internet and Network" icon.
    • Choose the connected network for the required information.

  • Now, back on your Wii U, click the "IP Address" icon and choose manual.
    • Enter in the IP address we now know, should look like "192.168.0.7".
    • Add 10 to the last number, making it "192.168.0.17".
  • For "Subnet Mask" enter the exact subnet mask we now know. It should look like "255.255.255.0".
  • Now, enter your "Default Gateway". It should have the same format as the IP address.
  • For "Auto-Obtain DNS" choose "No".
    • Enter in the exact DNS. There will most likely be more than one listed. Enter the first on the list as the "Primary" and the second as "Secondary". If you have more than two, the rest can be ignored.
  • Choose "Don't Use" for Proxy Server (unless you use one. If you don't know what it is, you don't use one.)
  • Keep MTU the same.
BAM! You should be all set to connect to the internet on your Wii U!

Still didn't work?
First try resetting your router. Then follow these steps.

1. Set Primary DNS to "8.8.8.8" and Secondary DNS to "8.8.4.4" and try again.
or
2. Set Primary DNS to "4.2.2.1" and Secondary DNS to "4.2.2.2" and try again (thanks to user TheVGChronolgy)

Wii U Won't Connect to Internet

1. Go into your Wii U settings and under "Internet" click on "View MAC Address". Write it down.
2. Find out your "Default Gateway", its commonly "192.168.0.1", you should know it from the "Connect to Router" video (its linked above). Type it into your address bar in your internet browser. This should take you to your router's control panel.
3. Log in using username/password "admin/admin" or "user/user". If it doesnt work, try googling the default username and password for your router's model.
4. Find "DHCP Static Lease" section (it could be under "Gateway"). Type in your Wii U's MAC address and allow it. Make sure to apply the changes.
5. Check if your Wii U can connect.
6. Still can't connect? Try the "Access Control" or "MAC Restrict Mode" of your router's control pannel. Type in the Wii U's MAC address and choose "allow". Apply the changes.
7. Enjoy your Wii U.

Let me know if you have any more questions,
Cheers,
Jon

    1. Okay, glad I could get you at least connected to your router! Be sure you are entering your specific information, not the example information (although, it can be the same in some instances).
Make sure: all your information is accurate.
Try this: Try changing your IP address again. For example, "192.168.0.17" to "192.168.0.9".
Then this: Set "auto obtain dns" to "yes".

Let me know if it works.

    2. It's the gateway and dns, they have to be different. On mine the IP was 192.168.0.11 (with the added ten) and my Gateway was 192.168.0.1 (without the ten) Subnet 255.255.255.0 and my DNS was 64.71.255.198 but the error I was making was in the first part

  2. I'm entering all the information from the command prompt. Adding 10 to the IP, which is what is giving me access to the network device now. i entered my dns exactly as they appeared as well. my only concern maybe is my gateway. i'm entering it as 192.168.0.1

do i need to add 10 to that as well? I have tried this, but it doesnt seem to fix the problem.

Please let me know if you can help

    1. Keep your Gateway the same as it is shown in the command prompt. Your Gateway is essentially the address of your router.

    1. Try setting Primary DNS to "8.8.8.8" and Secondary DNS to "8.8.4.4". I'll have another possible solution shortly.

      Delete
    2. If that doesn't work, try Primary DNS to "4.2.2.1" and Secondary DNS to "4.2.2.2"

    3. Unfortunately neither of those options worked.

  9. I can connect to my router, but not my internet. I double checked all of my information, tried using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for my DNS as well as 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2, but neither worked. Do you have any other ideas? (Btw, thank you for helping me at least connect to the router!)

  13. I am having the same problem as well! I wonder if b/c I've changed my Internet access code from the s/n number is causing the issue. I would hate to have to reset my router and go thru the same pain of getting my router to sync with my other devices again! Nintendo is such a drama queen when it comes to specific access and protection!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I forgot to mention that the only way I could get my router to receive a green check was to put the s/n number for my WEP code. But my WEP key is a different password

  19. Thanks for posting, I really cannot believe I had to manually enter my connection details! Nintendo should be ashamed of themselves!
I can see a lot of disappointed kids on Christmas morning.

For those that are connecting to their router but not the internet, double check what you entered for the DNS server addresses, i had a typo in mine and it was stopping me.

  23. This got me to connect to the first part but still couldn't connect to internet. I did a specific search on problems with connecting on the internet with a Motorola modem and got to this site http://techforums.nintendo.com/thread/18064. There are a few things you can do with the modem that solves the issue if you are still having problems. I recommend doing a specific search for your type of modem and the problem or visit the site as the directions may work. Hope this helps

  24. I was with Nintedo for over 3 hrs trying to solve the issues..no luck...they werent even able to help me connect to the router..I actually walked them through the steps so i can connect to the router thanks to this video and well i just dont get the access to the internet. I talked to my internet provider and they wont help either since my other devices do connect find. So im stuck with an expensive game system but cant even use half of the features...not worth at all...

  28. I had the same issues connecting. I tried all your suggestions and nada. What I did was use my old router (Belkin), plugged it into my ISP router to bypass it and used my hardwired Nintendo usb connector and it worked. So no wireless but hardwired. Must be something to do with routers supplied by ISP. mine is shaw here in Canada. good luck "EH"

  29. i couldn't get anything connected, manually configured and could connect to the network device, but not inernet. spent two hours on phone with Nintendo level 2 tech support and they couldn't figure it out. i ended up turning the security off on my router and it connected fine. then i downloaded the update, after that it would connect securely fine. i had changed every setting in the routing previously and nothing worked. also, make sure your encryption key (password) is correct. it will connect to Network Device even if your password is WRONG, this can be misleading, so if you turn your security off and it connects fine, it could be that your password was wrong, try resetting it to something new and connecting with the new password.

  30. I am not buying a lan adapter 4 Wii u

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lan adapter: 80$

      Wii U: 300+$

      Hmmmmmmmmm

BTW! once you get the update, the issues with connecting pretty much gone.... pretty silly.

Durham is 100% right. just disable your security and download update then reset your security with a new password and reset your wifi connection on the Wii U.

  32. i had to call several times, sometimes the number won't even take your call, says they are too busy, but if you get the option to hit 1 for internet connections then it shouldn't take long to get to Level 1 support. once you talk to them make sure and let them know you've tried manually configuring everything as well as adding 10 to the last value of the IP address, that is all they are going to have you do. at least that was my experience. the hold is longer for level 2, but wasn't bad.

  37. Nintendo pooped its pants releasing the Wii U

Your best bet is to just plug it into a modem directly with an ether net connection (using the wii ether net to usb converter thing, about 8$) The moden would have to have no security as well. get the update, then everything is fine.

Or go to a buddies house who has no security on his or her wireless router (or a friend who knows how to disable the security of his router, since your obviously incapable of doing that) download the update, go home, and consider kill yourself because Nintendo butt raped you.

  43. After updating the settings manually as suggested I was able to connect to the router BUT STILL UNABLE TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET. I then called nintendo at 1-800-255-3700 and a wonderfully patient CSR walked me through the items I had updated. We found that IP address, subnet mask and default gateway that I had taken from the router info I had gotten from going to 192.168.0.1 on the internet were incorrect for our purposes and that the IP address should be the one associated with the label IPv4 when running ipconfig at the CMD prompt on my windows computer. As well,we took the subnet mask and gateway info from this same place and not what appeared on the router info untility.
We also updated the 2 DNS fields as follows: DNS1 8.8.8.8 and DNS2 8.8.4.4
I AM VERY PLEASED TO REPORT THAT THIS WORKED!!! AND I AM NOW DOWNLOADING THE UPDATE.

My router is about 2 rooms away from my wii u and the router is close to a wall. I cant really move either of the two. Any help would be apperciated.

  46. Struggled for 5 hrs trying to get the Wii U to connect to the wifi using the first method. What finally worked was the second method using the DHCP Lease. Basically you have to enter the MAC address of the wii and assign a ip address to it. Then you do the first method again and use whatever ip address you assigned.

Hope this helps anyone who's able to connect to the network device but not to the internet.
